Saturday 15 November 2008 - Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico
We had a bit of a late start to get to CAXA and had plans to get the bus to Papantla and onto the ruins at Tajin, but upon our arrival found that it was a 5 hour bus trip and the next couple of buses were booked out. So by the time we were going to get there everything would have been closed. Nikki and Raziel had been talking about a drink that the locals love called Pulque. Its made from a cactus plant, is alcoholic and is subtle in its effects. So now with an afternoon free we went off to Raziels favourite Pulque place, which was out the back of someone's house. This lady apparently makes it, then they sell it out the back. It comes in 1 litre ceramic cups, is watery, and milky in colour. We were there probably 2 hours, but the time seemed to really go quickly as we sipped on our Pulque, slowly becoming little light headed and mellow. A guy across from us had obviously been enjoying his Pulque for quite some time as he started to nod off and his body become more and more jelly like, eventually passing out and breaking his Pulque cup. 
After we left the Pulque house we went past this window with a sign in it, '6 sheets of asbestos for sale'. We couldn't believe it. Nikki says that it is sold everywhere, and they have no idea of the health hazards.
After this we went onto to have dinner at Mrs Religous's house. This is the nickname given by Raz & Nik to a lady who cooks meals at the front of her house and sells them. Her food was so fresh and delicious, and she was quick with her hands hand making tortilla's in front of us.
